My entrée into the blogging world began about two years ago when I decided to write an online journal chronicling my adventures as a single parent. I would write about the funny things my then 4-year old son would say and post pictures from our weekly outings and holidays. It was a great way to keep in touch with my family and keep a record of my son’s childhood memories while relieving some of my ‘mommy stress.’
Eventually, my passion for meeting people and recommending businesses to my friends migrated its way into my blog. After six months of promoting other mom entrepreneurs online, I started to get calls and e-mails from women asking me to write about them. In August of 2009, I launched MyMompreneur.com—an online, membership-based community that connects, promotes and support mom- and women-owned businesses.
‘Blogging’ is a buzz word on everyone’s lips these days. From savvy businesses to busy moms, it seems like everyone is jumping online and into the blogosphere. For those of you who think a blog is a swamp-like place where Shrek lives (that’s ‘bog,’ by the way!), I’m going to break down blogging to the very basics: who needs a blog; what should you blog about and how you can get one?
What the blog are you talking about?
In simplified terms, a web log or ‘blog’ for short, is a website that allows users to reflect, share opinions and discuss various topics in the form of an online journal with the opportunity for readers to comment on posts. The content of a blog can include everything from your thoughts, photos and videos for a personal blog to company news, product release information or informational articles for business-based blogs.
Who can blog?
Anyone with an internet connection and an opinion can blog! Blogging is available for free through sites such as blogger.com, wordpress.com or typepad.com that allows you set up a basic blog with options for customizing the look and feel. Another option for your blog is a hosted blog such as bluehost.com,
dreamhost.com, mediatemple.net or Godaddy.com which installs and hosts your blog (for a monthly fee.) Or you can choose a network with an established community to host your blog such as blogher.com or ning.com. It just depends on how much you want to customize your blog, measure traffic or increase your opportunity to make money on your blog.
Whether you’re blogging as a hobby, to promote your business or to earn some extra money, the most important thing to remember about your blogging is to just have fun! Above all, your readers want to be entertained and feel connected, and if you’re having a good time, your readers will, too.
